چکیده

Ni-YSZ anode supported solid oxide fuel cells (ASCs) were tested under various simulated syngas. There was no voltage degradation of the cell operated on 41%H2-7%CH4-6%CO-11%CO2-35%H2O fuel condition for nearly 450 hours. However, the high vapor content reduced the open circuit voltage (OCV) and discharge voltage. The cells run steadily with most dry syngas until the simulated reforming temperature reduced to 500C and steam to carbon ratio (S/C) reduced to 3. The corresponding composition of this syngas was 49%H2-24%CH4-8CO-14CO2-5%H2O. In this case, the voltage dropped quickly and the cell failed within 5 hours. The microstructure analysis showed that the failed cell had a carbon deposit layer of approximately 10 μm thickness close to the anode surface. The results indicated that carbon deposited quickly on Ni surface when there was no adequate carbon dioxide or vapor to avoid methane cracking.

Three-dimensional modeling of transport phenomena in a planar anode-supported solid oxide fuel cell

In this article three dimensional modeling of a planar solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) was investigated. The main objective was to attain the optimized cell operation. SOFC operation simulation involves a large number of parameters,   complicated equations, (mostly partial differential equations), and a sophisticated simulation technique; hence, a finite element method (FEM) multiphysics approach ...

Nanostructuring Platinum Nanoparticles on Ni/Ce0.8Gd0.2O2-δ Anode for Low Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cell via Single-step Infiltration: A Case Study

With the aim of promoting the Ni/Ce0.8Gd0.2O2-δ (Ni/GDC20) cermet anodic performance of low temperature solid oxide fuel cell (LT-SOFC) [1], nanostructuring platinum nanoparticles on NiO/GDC composite was done by single-step wet-infiltration of hexachloroplatinic acid hexahydrate (H2PtCl6.6H2O) precursor on NiO/GDC20 composite. The anodic polarization resistance was measured using symmetr...

Tailoring the Microstructure of a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Anode Support by Calcination and Milling of YSZ

In this study, the effects of calcination and milling of 8YSZ (8 mol% yttria stabilized zirconia) used in the nickel-YSZ anode on the performance of anode supported tubular fuel cells were investigated. For this purpose, two different types of cells were prepared based on a Ni-YSZ/YSZ/Nd2NiO4+δ-YSZ configuration. For the anode preparation, a suspension was prepared by mixing NiO and YSZ in a ra...

The mechanical and electrical properties of Ni/YSZ anode support for solid oxide fuel cells

The most commonly used solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) anode material is a two phase nickel and yttria stabilized zirconia (Ni/YSZ) cermet. And the mechanical stability of anode support layer, in anode-supported electrolyte designs, is very important for large scale applications. During the assembly of stack and normal operation, the cermet anode should withstand enough mechanical loading to preve...

Electrolyte Degradation in Anode Supported Microtubular YSZ-based Solid Oxide Steam Electrolysis Cells at high voltages of operation

Degradation of solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) is probably the biggest concern in the field of high temperature steam electrolysis (HTSE). Anode supported, YSZ-based microtubular solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) have been tested in fuel cell mode and also at high voltages (up to 2.8V) under electrolysis mode. At high steam conversion rates the cell voltage tends to saturate. Our hypothesis ...
